Phonics and Reading

Phonics

At North Worcester Primary Academy, we believe phonics is the foundation for successful reading and writing, and we are committed to helping every child become a confident, fluent reader.

Using the Read Write Inc. programme, children are taught to recognise sounds, read words accurately, and develop strong spelling and writing skills through daily phonics lessons. Books are carefully matched to each child’s ability so they can experience success and build confidence, while regular assessments and targeted support, especially for those who need extra help, ensure all pupils keep up with their learning.

Reading

Reading is central to school life, with a strong focus on helping every child become a confident, enthusiastic reader. From the earliest years, children are taught to read through a structured phonics programme, ensuring they develop secure decoding skills and build confidence with books matched to their ability. As they progress, pupils engage with a wide range of high-quality texts, taking part in whole-class reading sessions that develop key comprehension skills such as predicting, retrieving, summarising and understanding vocabulary.

Reading is woven throughout the curriculum to help children 'know more and remember more'. Support is carefully tailored, so all pupils can succeed, with the aim that every child leaves Key Stage One as a fluent, capable reader who enjoys reading for both pleasure and learning.
