    Rationale and vision:

At North Worcester, our maths curriculum intends to equip all children with the appropriate knowledge and skills they need for their next stage of education. We aim to provide an inclusive approach for all and that our pupils will acquire a deep, long-term, secure, and adaptable understanding of maths. We adopt a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics.

We believe it is vital to ensure children have a love for maths, a thirst for challenge, the courage to make mistakes and believe in themselves to reach their potential. We value the importance of mathematical discussion and vocabulary.

The mathematics curriculum taught in each year group and the progression of knowledge has been taken from National Curriculum.

    Curriculum Intent

    Our mathematics curriculum:

    • Is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Mathematics
    • Follows a coherent, well-sequenced progression of small steps
    • Prioritises depth over acceleration
    • Ensures all pupils access age-related content, with appropriate support and challenge

We adopt the NCETM’s Five Big Ideas for Teaching for Mastery:

    1. Coherence
    2. Representation and Structure
    3. Mathematical Thinking
    4. Fluency
    5. Variation

At North Worcester we encourage a can-do attitude, growth mindset and perseverance in maths, which will remain with pupils beyond North Worcester.

We use CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach that aims to develop pupils’ factual, conceptual, and procedural understanding, enabling them to reason, problem solve and apply knowledge to a range of contexts.

A ‘mastery’ approach has been implemented at North Worcester Primary Academy for the planning, delivery and engagement with mathematics

Teachers at North Worcester use a range of resources including; NCETM materials and White Rose Maths.

We are committed to building on prior learning and enabling our pupils to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of maths that they can develop over time. Additional time is allocated to teaching times tables, arithmetic and basic number concepts to ensure key skills are developed and retained. Reasoning and problem-solving skills are explicitly taught to enable pupils to become independent learners who are prepared to take risks. Cross curricular links are made wherever possible and pupils are encouraged to apply skills from all areas to complete real-life challenges and give learning a sense of purpose.

To highlight maths as a life skill and celebrate maths all around us, we hold whole school maths days (Maths Week England; World Maths Day; International Day of Mathematics and NSPCC Number Day).

Lessons are carefully planned to incorporate the key elements of teaching for mastery (coherence, representations and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency, and variation) summed up in the following diagram.

We also provide opportunities for children to use their mathematical skills across the wider curriculum. This can occur in a variety of ways and in a number of subjects, but there are chances for children to show that they have fully understood a concept by using it in a different context.
