The DT curriculum at North Worcester provides children with a real-life context to learning. We want our children to aspire to design, make and evaluate products through creating opportunities for them in the wider world as global citizens. Through the DT curriculum, children are inspired by the legacy of world class engineers, designers, chefs and architects. Planning is sequenced to return to key knowledge and skills regularly and build upon these cumulatively. All Learners can access the full DT curriculum at North Worcester. The Units have been designed carefully to expose children to solving problems in a wide range of contexts; local, national and global. Through the study of DT, children combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as of functions and industrial practices.
All teaching of DT follows the design, make and evaluate cycle. Each stage is rooted in technical knowledge and technical vocabulary.
DT lessons are practical using deconstruction and exploration to better understand mechanisms, structures, food, textiles and electronics. Through discussion and discovery, teachers lead the children towards a better understanding of the subject matter.
Through practical lessons and frequent retrieval of language and design principles, the children embed knowledge into their long-term memory.
The making process gives the children choices over materials and tools that have been provided to us. To evaluate, children compare their own products against design criteria that they have developed. DT is taught with high expectation, where each of the stages is given equal emphasis.
Within DT, children are prepared to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We encourage children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.
